Bad Sisters Season 2 Episode 6, “Who by Water,” throws Ian under a suspicious light in the eyes of Bibi and Houlihan. Of course, his seemingly affable nature has been sus from the get-go. Now, his preying on the vulnerable and grieving Eva proves he’s not to be trusted. And it seems like he’s persuaded Eva to give him access to her money or Blánaid’s funds. Loftus almost using Grace’s money is also icky (even though he returned it).
While there’s some narrative movement in “Who by Water,” namely in painting a rightful bullseye on Ian’s back, Season 2 continues to waver somewhat in consistency and strength. I miss the dark comedy of Season 1 and the more in-depth look at the sisters’ bond. It also feels like the rest of their world—their work, their children—has been cast aside.

Bad Sisters, “Who by Water”
We open with Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka (Eve Hewson) returning to Eva’s (Sharon Horgan) house after the Angelica incident. Eva asks her sisters what happened, but Becka and Ursula both let out a sob before running inside. Then, we see Angelica (Fiona Shaw) floating on the water. Is she dead, or is she merely unconscious? After this, the Garvey sisters spiral while Ian (Owen McDonnell) boasts a thousand-yard stare.
Next, Bibi, Becka and Ursula learn Eva disclosed her worries about Angelica to the guards. She believes Angelica was blackmailing money out of Grace. Eva’s sisters are shocked. Bibi declares that Eva has given them a motive to murder Angelica. Ian, the voice of reason, offers to head to the marina to see if there’s camera footage connecting the Garveys to the boat.
Erase the Evidence
Later, Ian arrives at the docks, where he spots Angelica’s blood on the boat. Uh-oh. Then, he spies a camera aimed squarely at said boat. Ian calls Eva to update her. She puts him on speakerphone so her sisters can listen. He plans to erase the camera footage, but they must clean the blood on the boat. Bibi, Becka and Ursula can see to that.

Elsewhere, Houlihan (Thaddea Graham) asks Roger (Michael Smiley) about Angelica. Roger admits she never came home last night; however, she could’ve ventured north, going where the Holy Spirit took her.
Houlihan finds this questionable. The conversation pivots to Ian threatening Angelica, something Houlihan didn’t know. Meanwhile, an older woman emerges from the house who has access to the camera facing the marina. Ian asks her if he can view her footage because someone stole his bike. She invites him inside on the condition that he’ll repair her radiator.
Save the Footage
Inside, Ian listens to the older woman rattle on about her late sister. He surreptitiously inserts a USB flash drive into her laptop to download the camera footage of Angelica meeting the Garvey sisters at the boat. He then scrubs the footage from the laptop and switches off the camera. Why did he save the footage to a USB? That’s not suspicious at all.

While our trio cleans the boat, Ursula finds Angelica’s phone ringing because Roger’s calling her. Bibi chucks it into the water. That feels too hasty; they could’ve perused her call log to see if she was in contact with Grace before she died. Becka tells Urs she’s bleeding, so they quickly leave the marina for the hospital.
Next, Loftus (Barry Ward) sits in his car with wads of cash. He’s parked outside the solicitor’s office. His daughter texts him, urging him to do something. She doesn’t want to go to Australia. He’s hesitant to head inside. Instead, Loftus turns around and leaves. Before that, though, he ignores a call from Houlihan. Speaking of her, we see Houlihan at the crash scene where Grace died. She sees flowers and a note from Angelica.
The Wagon’s Involvement
Then, Houlihan examines the tracks from Grace’s vehicle as she swerved off the road. Houlihan leaves another voicemail for Loftus, insisting that Grace was driving away from Angelica’s when she crashed. She believes Eva was telling the truth — The Wagon was involved in Grace’s death.

Later, Eva reunites with her sisters at the hospital to support Becka, who’s getting an ultrasound. Initially, they can’t see the baby. Ursula reassures Becka that sometimes you can’t see the fetus this early on. However, the doctor eventually finds Becka’s baby. The sisters are relieved.
Elsewhere, Houlihan chats with Ian again. She reveals she looked into Ian’s alibi on the night Grace died. Said alibi, Cathal Leary, has been difficult to contact. Ian claims Cathal services nautical cranes, so he might be away. Ian believes he has Cathal’s business card, so he motions toward the entrance of his home to retrieve it. Houlihan asks for Ian’s number instead in case she needs to contact him.
Inconvenient Feelings
Then, Ian stops by Eva’s house to inform her about Houlihan’s visit. It seems the guards are onto him as a primary suspect for Grace’s death. Eva adds that she’s incessantly watching the news, hoping they don’t find Angelica because that means they’ll be safe. She also admits she’s terrified for everyone, especially Blánaid. Ian insists they’ll watch out for her.

The conversation pivots to the kiss they shared the other day. Eva admits the timing is inconvenient. Ian counters that feelings can’t be timed. He grabs her hand, but she pushes him away. Next, Roger arrives, asking Eva if he’s seen Angelica. Ian tells off Roger, which Eva disapproves of. She reveals she knows what losing a sister is like before getting a proper goodbye. This hits a nerve for Ian, who lost his sister in such a manner. He storms off.
Houlihan reunites with Loftus, updating him on her theories. She believes Ian confronted Angelica on behalf of the sisters to retrieve the money. He might’ve taken it too far and done something to her. Loftus counters that Grace was on the run before she died. She killed JP, and that drove her to her death. As for Angelica, Loftus asks Houlihan if she submitted a general alert on her vehicle. Loftus urges her to do some “good-old-fashioned police work.”
Where’s the Car?
Meanwhile, Eva and Ian text each other. At the same time, Matt (Daryl McCormack) contacts Becka, claiming they need to talk. Becka responds that she’s pregnant. Does he still want to chat? Matt looks shocked. After this, Becka climbs into bed with Eva for a cuddle session. Becka tearfully states that Angelica didn’t deserve to die like that. Eva agrees.

The following morning, Bibi searches Angelica’s purse. She finds a set of car keys. Uh-oh. In a panic, Bibi heads to Eva’s house, practically knocking down her door. Ian arrives at that moment, revealing he needs to fetch Blánaid’s kit. Likely story. If the guards find Angelica’s vehicle on the dock, they’ll know she boarded a boat. Ian suggests Bibi take the key fob to the parking lot to find Angelica’s car.
Unfortunately, Bibi spots Houlihan at the marina. Bibi hastily climbs into a car, thinking it belonged to Angelica. However, Houlihan finds the correct one, which has a car boot. Bibi hightails it out of there to avoid getting caught.
Making a Play for Ian
Later, the Garvey sisters meet at the Forty Foot. Bibi reveals that she almost had a run-in with Houlihan at the marina. The detective already found Angelica’s vehicle. Eva encourages the gals not to discuss anything regarding Grace, Angelica, etc. Bibi addresses the elephant in the room: What’s going on with Eva and Ian? Eva admits they have feelings for each other. Bibi calls Eva out for this, realizing Angelica was right. Eva is making a play for her dead sister’s husband. Ouch. Eva leaves.

Next, Houlihan tracks down Loftus, who’s at the pub. The solicitor has texted him, asking why he missed their meeting. Houlihan believes it’s all connected, and there’s something more significant at play. It all points toward covering up JP’s murder. Wherever Ian is, the Garveys aren’t far behind. Houlihan declares they should arrest Ian before he runs. Loftus reminds her that they can’t do that.
Houlihan says that, at the very least, they could search for the money at Ian’s place. Loftus reveals that they found the money in Grace’s car. Houlihan looks incredulous. Loftus insists the cash is irrelevant. Grace crashed while doing a runner; nothing more, nothing less.
An Egregious Error
Elsewhere, Joe (Peter Claffey) asks to see Becka. Eva, still raw from the confrontation at the Forty Foot, discloses Becka’s pregnancy to Joe. Joe wonders if the baby’s his or Matt’s before leaving. Ian conveniently arrives, asking Eva what’s wrong. Eva tells him about Bibi’s hurtful words. However, Eva does have feelings for Ian. Ian uses this moment to act. He kisses her. This time, Eva responds in kind. Ew. No, girl. No.

At the same time, Bibi tells Nora (Yasmine Akram) that Ian doesn’t have LinkedIn. Nora reminds her wife that neither of them has LinkedIn. Why is that suspicious? The wheels turn in Bibi’s head. After she and Ian have sex, Eva locks herself in the bathroom. Ian tries to lure her out.
Eventually, she lets him in. They sit on the floor, chatting about what they did and what it all means. Ian insists he’s in it for the long run. He’s devoted to Eva, Blánaid and the Garvey sisters. He adds that they can take measures to ensure Blánaid’s protected. You know, in case the sisters wind up in prison. Ian proposes they go to the bank the following day.
Confronting a Prick
Before he departs, Becka sees him and Eva kiss. Becka tells Eva she can do whatever she wants, but the former clearly disapproves. The following day, Loftus returns Grace’s cash to the evidence lockers. Houlihan catches him. She reveals she searched Grace’s vehicle—every nook and cranny—and that Loftus tampered with the evidence. Houlihan believes she should report him. Loftus threatens to revoke her detective status if she speaks to him like that again.

Next, Bibi and Nora emerge from their meeting at the fertility clinic. Bibi sees Ian and Eva walking out of a bank, arm in arm and laughing. Bibi confronts Ian at his home that night. Why did he ask her to look for Angelica’s car? Did he know Houlihan would be at the marina? Bibi reveals what Angelica tried to tell the Garveys before falling into the water: that Ian can’t be trusted.
Ian brushes her off, insisting everyone is grieving and not in their right mind. However, it dawns on Bibi that Angelica was right—he is dangerous. After Bibi leaves, Ian’s face changes somewhat.
It’s all true.
