Jude Law is adventuring in a galaxy far, far away in the new Disney+ original series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The new show is led by series co-creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford. Alongside the four kids—Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Wim), Kyriana Kratter (KB), Robert Timothy Smith (Neel) and Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Fern)—Nick Frost will also voice a new droid, SM 33, because every galactic hero needs a trusted droid.

The first-look images below of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew were shared on the official Star Wars‘ X/Twitter account.

Law will play Jod Na Nawood, a quick-thinking traveler who uses his charm and conversation to get out of scrapes. Law describes the show as a return to roots, promising a “joyful” experience in an interview with People. The show will follow a band of children as they navigate the Star Wars universe in an original storyline.

The Story

A blue alien child with elephant like trunk and a human boy walking through grassy area with hover carts (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew)

There is nothing more quintessentially Star Wars than a rugged man helping a wayward child, and the formula works from Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope to Kenobi. The official synopsis portrays the show as a coming-of-age story.

It reads: “When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”

Our Thoughts

This early look at the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series gives us Stand By Me in space vibes. The inclusion of a childhood staple in the hoverbikes grounds the story and makes it feel more relatable. We’re ready to see a fun, campy storyline return to an otherwise serious universe. Yes, there are space pirates, exploding planets and intergalactic battles happening somewhere, but there are also just people living their lives. It’s a great, big galaxy, and we’re excited to see a softer side of it again.

The Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series will premiere on December 3, 2024.
